Service to the community has always been an important part of Scouting. It teaches citizenship, leadership, and responsibility. As we have done in the past, the Pack will be sponsoring a project each month. Each will benefit a local group in our community. It is hoped that all Cub Scouts and their families will participate in these activities. Our Troop is also encouraged to participate as well. Each month will have a theme project.
September - Goodwill clothing drive: Bring bags of clothing to the Pack meeting on 9/27.
October - Aluminum Can Food Drive: Scouts are asked to collect for recycling aluminum cans from now until the October Pack meeting. Cans will be collected on November 6 from everyone and recycled for cash. That cash will then in turn be used to purchase canned goods and non-perishables for the "Hands of God" food pantry.
November - Pet Food Drive: Pet food and supplies will be collected during the November Pack meeting for the local animal shelter.
December - Angel Tree: We will sponsor foster children for Christmas again this year. Details to follow.
Contact Callie if you have any questions.

The Annual Pop Corn Sale starts October 1st. We will have a joint Troop & Pack roll out of this years sale during the meetings on September 27. We will discuss due dates, safety, and of course PRIZES! Trails End has changed packaging this year and more product is in the package. We ask families to have at least one adult at this meeting even if your Scout is not able to attend. Order forms will be distributed at the meeting along with some promotional materials. This is the only fundraiser our units have and is crucial to our ability to provide advancements, help pay for camp, and purchase equipment.

Cherokee District Cub Scout Fall Family Encampment will be held October 1 - 3, 2010. It will be at Farris Memorial Park in Mayodan this year. Families must register through their Cubmasters. Each family member will need to complete part A and C of the BSA health and Fitness form. If a health form was completed at Day Camp, you can use those at FFE. Physicals are not required. Cost of the event is $6 per person for the event to a maximum of $24 per family. Food cost will be extra and will be dependent on the number of meals. All registration fees are due by September 13th. Registration after this date goes to $8 per person with no family maximum. There will be no crafts this year, however there will be fishing, BB's and Archery, as well as games.
Packs may camp on Friday night, but activities do not officially open until Saturday morning. A few members of the Troop have agreed to do the cooking so parents can concentrate on be at the planned activities. Event schedules will be available on opening day. Please contact Callie for information and to sign up. You will also need to let her know if you want to camp Friday evening or not so meals can be planned and a final cost can be figured.

The Troop will be headed for Cherokee Scout Reservation the weekend of September 17th. We will be staying in Blackfoot Camp site on Friday night. Saturday we will be hiking the perimeter trail to the back side of the camp above the lake. We will spend the night there, then hike out on Sunday morning. We will meet at the Community Building at 6pm. Scouts should eat before coming and are encouraged to bring a Friday evening snack. We will be back to Huntsville by 11:00 on Sunday. Scouts may bring extra comfort items for Friday as we will be able to leave them behind in the vehicles before heading out Saturday morning.
Due to the amount of logging that has been done on the north side of camp, some of the trail markers will be missing. Scouts are expected to bring a compass as we will be using topographic maps and compass to find our way around to the lake. This is only about a 7 mile hike that is not to strenuous. There may be time to fish at the lake late Saturday afternoon, if anyone is so inclined.
Parents are invited to make the trip with the Troop. We will be discussing food selection, cooking, and equipment needs during the next few meetings before the trip. Cost will be $2 per person for the facility use fees, plus what ever the cost of food. Equipment lists are posted at the end of the Troop Guide Book. Click on the Guide book tab above, then click on the equipment list link in the table of contents. We have also re-posted the original (updated) article on the Troop News page. Look for the link at the bottom of that page.
As everyone arrives on Friday, we will look at pack's to assure they have what they need and leave behind what they don't. Parents are asked to allow their younger Scouts to pack themselves as we are building for a longer trip in the spring. They will need to be able to make smart decisions based on need, weight, and multiple use items. We want them to be able to justify the equipment they carry. A pack may seem light at the house, but gets heavy a few miles down the trail.
